B&Q Outdoor Catalogue

We met with B&Q team in December last year to discuss their need for an external stand to hold their Spring Garden catalogue.  Clearly the most important requirement of the unit was that it would withstand the vagaries of the British weather.  As most of the stands would be placed in the outdoor garden section, it would have little or no protection from the elements.  The unit also had to be cost effective, meeting a tight budget requirement. The team were keen to keep the look of the unit similar to those they already had, so we carried out a site visit to view the current POS units.

As time was of the essence, concept drawings and prototypes were quickly despatched to B&Q. We proposed a simple and cost efficient unit comprising of side panels and base with two angled bins, which would hold two facings of the catalogue side-by-side.  The unit was to be made in mild sheet steel and powder coated with polyester based paint to increase its durability in a high traffic area and also create a unit with a high water ingress resistance level. The paint was also of a similar colour to existing units, so fit well with the brand promotion. Having the bins at an angle meant that the lids could not be left open once catalogues had been removed, so they would not remain open to the elements. 

The units were then dressed with graphics, attached to the side fins and the bin lids by magnets.  This means the graphics can be changed at store level, thus allowing the option of using the units for future promotions – a real bonus in the current climate.

When these units were placed in stores in March, it coincided with a further spate of wintry weather, to the delight of the B&Q team, who said “If they can stand up to this weather they can stand up to anything!”
